Figure Abstract In Recline by Denise Souza Finney

This drawing illustrates some good abstract features that I rather like in a figure drawing. I like the circular ball for the breast, the disappearing lines for the raised leg and the severe curve of the chin and jawline. I tend to draw in an angular fashion. I like the combination of angular hard lines along side some very thoughtfully drawn curved outlines of the body. They are like two opposing personalities, one is sharp and to the point and the other is observational and sensitive.

I can’t say that I know alot about the theories of abstract art. But I find the idea of abstract work interesting and there are plenty of moments in my work that seem abstract to my eye that I like. Whether or not I need a theory in which to work by is not really the point. But art and art history all seems so vague and random sometimes, it’s nice to have an idea that resonates with the work that you are trying to create. This is all to say that I have been exploring this topic, generally by searching on the web and looking for images that I like, but when it comes to reading about abstract art I haven’t found a lot that broadens the topic.

Are there any abstract artists that particularly resonate with you?  If so please share, I would love to explore some new ideas.
